Discover Zimbabwe's

Matopos

More than just boulder mountains

Matobo National Park, located in southern Zimbabwe, is renowned for its picturesque granite rock formations, SAN cave paintings and rich cultural heritage. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the park is home to a significant population of white and black rhinos, as well as leopards and diverse birdlife, including the highest concentration of Verreaux’s eagles in the world. Matobo also holds deep spiritual and historical significance, with sites such as the grave of Cecil Rhodes and sacred shrines used by local communities.

We’ve established some lovely overnight spots just outside the park to cater for all accommodation preferences - from rustic camping and quaint guest houses and a luxurious lodge built into granite kopjes and boulders. This is more than just a stop-over...we urge you to explore more!

Our Expert Opinion

Matobo National Park is all about striking scenery, unique vegetation, and deep cultural history. The landscape is dominated by dramatic granite outcrops, ancient caves with San rock art, and iconic sites like Cecil John Rhodes' grave at World’s View.

For hiking enthusiasts, the park and its surroundings offer incredible trails to explore on foot. While it’s not a traditional game-viewing destination, rhino tracking is a truly memorable experience for those with a bit of extra time. I loved the rich cultural history, stories and incredible architecture of the great Zimbabwe Ruins near Masvingo, which we visited after our stay at Matobo. Read more about it below...

We usually recommend including the Great Zimbabwe Ruins near Masvingo when visiting the southern region of Zimbabwe - it’s a heritage site not to be missed. As the largest stone structure in precolonial Southern Africa, it’s a true bucket-list destination for young and old.

A guided walk through the ruins is a must. The scale, craftsmanship and history of these dry-stone wall complexes are nothing short of awe-inspiring. One is captivated by the intricate architecture and powerful sense of place. We truly believe every visitor to Zimbabwe should experience The Great Zimbabwe Ruins for themselves.
